Purpose:
The purpose of this e-learning module is to provide seafarers and other personnel working on ships, with general information about the threat of piracy on the high seas. It serves as a guide on how to make effective preparations before transiting a High Risk Area to be able to avoid, or deal with, attacks from pirates, if avoidance is unsuccessful.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this module you will be able to:
- Describe High Risk Areas with respect to piracy activities;
- Explain the purpose of Maritime Security Transit Corridors;
- Explain the purpose and function of Piracy Reporting Centres
- Describe the different multi-level deterrents to prevent pirates from boarding;
- Describe the different boarding methods used by pirates;
- Describe Best Management Practices and state BMP5 requirements;
- Identify threats and construct a Risk Assessment, as part of a Voyage Plan.
